A simple stick-on thermometer for the inside of a crabitat. Land hermit crabs are tropical animals and are routinely kept too cool in Australian homes over winter — a cold crab goes quiet, stops eating and buries itself, which is easily mistaken for a normal moult. A thermometer on the wall is the cheapest way to know which one you are looking at.
Benefits
- Mounts inside the enclosure — reads the crabs' actual environment, not the room.
- Always on — no batteries, nothing to fail.
- Small — takes up no usable space.
Using it
Mount it at crab height rather than at the top of the enclosure, where warm air collects and the reading will be optimistic. Pair it with a humidity gauge — temperature and humidity together are what determine whether a crab can moult successfully.
The combined unit is the Hermit Crab Dual Thermometer & Humidity Gauge. More in Zoo Med.
