A dog collar does two jobs that are easy to confuse. It carries identification, which every dog needs whether or not it walks on one, and on some dogs it is also the attachment point for the lead. If your dog pulls, the lead belongs on a harness and the collar stays as the ID collar — that split is the single most useful thing to know before choosing one.
Sizing and the two-finger rule
Measure around the neck where the collar will sit, add room for two fingers between the strap and the coat, and buy to that measurement rather than to a breed name. Check the fit again on a long-coated dog after a clip, because the same collar that sat correctly in winter can be loose in summer. Puppies need checking every few weeks, and a collar that can be slipped over the ears is not a collar the dog is wearing.
