Feliway diffusers and refills

A Feliway diffuser is a plug-in unit that releases a synthetic copy of a cat pheromone into a room. It comes in two forms and they are not interchangeable, so the first thing to work out is which problem you are solving. Feliway Classic copies the facial pheromone a cat leaves when it rubs its cheeks on furniture, and is aimed at a cat unsettled by its environment: urine spraying, scratching or hiding. Feliway Friends is aimed at cats living together, for introductions, adoptions, and fighting or chasing between resident cats.

Both are sold the same way. The Diffuser & Refill packs contain the electric unit plus one 48ml vial, which is what you want if you do not already own a diffuser. After that you only need vials, and the Feliway Refill is stocked as a single or as a 3 pack. Buying a refill without owning the matching unit is the most common ordering mistake here, and Classic and Friends vials look very similar on a shelf.

On placement and timing: one vial covers an area of up to 70m² and lasts up to 30 days, though the manufacturer notes it can run between three and five weeks depending on the room. Plug it into the room the cat actually spends time in, not a hallway, and keep it clear of shelves, doors, curtains and furniture, because the pheromone has to circulate. The unit is designed to be left switched on continuously rather than used in bursts.

A diffuser is one part of the picture. Litter box placement, scratching outlets and enrichment do the other part, and are worth sorting out at the same time.
