Pick by coat first. The Undercoat deShedding Tool is the one most people mean by “FURminator brush”. It comes with a short-hair or a long-hair edge, and the difference is tooth length rather than width, so the long-hair version is the only one that reaches undercoat through a long topcoat. The Grooming Rake suits very dense double coats where the deShedding edge is slow going. The Curry Comb is a short-to-medium-coat tool that lifts surface hair and spreads the coat's natural oils; it will not pull undercoat.

Two of these are not deShedders at all. The Sensitive Areas Tool is a small curved head for the face, ears, paws and belly, where a full-size deShedding edge is too harsh. The Bathing Brush dispenses shampoo or conditioner from its handle while you wash, so it works alongside the coat washes rather than instead of a deShedding tool.

How to use a deshedding brush: work on a dry, detangled coat, brush in the direction the hair grows, and keep the strokes light — the edge reaches the undercoat without pressing down. Short sessions of a few minutes, once or twice a week, suit most dogs and cats, with more frequent sessions through a seasonal moult. Stop on any area with broken skin, hot spots or irritation. Deshedding tools are designed for coats with an undercoat; curly and low-shedding coats are better served by a slicker or pin brush.
