OraVet dental chews are an at-home, daily dental routine for dogs. They are dual-action: the chewing action scrubs away existing plaque, while the key ingredient delmopinol coats the teeth, preventing bacteria from attaching to the enamel and inhibiting plaque formation. Delmopinol spreads through the mouth and cleans down to the gumline, which is the part a chew that works on texture alone tends to miss.
They are a daily chew, so buy for the month
This is the detail that catches people out. OraVet is given daily, not weekly, so a pack is a monthly consumable rather than an occasional treat. The published results are measured on that basis: a 59% reduction in bad breath, a 57% reduction in tartar and a 39% reduction in plaque, each with a daily OraVet chew for 28 days. Pack sizes follow the dosing rather than the size of the dog - the three smaller bands come as a 28 pack, and the Over 23kg band comes as a 14 pack. A 3-chew pack is also stocked if you want to see whether your dog will take one before committing.
Choosing a size
Four weight bands: up to 4.5kg (Yellow), 4.5-11kg (Blue), 11-23kg (Purple) and over 23kg (Maroon). Match the chew to the dog's weight rather than sizing up for value - a chew that is too large for the dog changes how it is chewed, and chewing is half of how the product works.
What a dental chew will not do
OraVet is preventative daily care for a mouth that is in reasonable shape. It is not a substitute for a veterinary dental examination or a scale under anaesthetic, and it will not resolve a problem that is already there. Red or bleeding gums, a broken or discoloured tooth, drooling, chewing on one side, or breath that has changed suddenly are all reasons to see a vet first and start a chew afterwards.
