Food for rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice and ferrets, from Oxbow, Burgess Excel, Alfalfa King, Vetafarm and Wombaroo. For a grazing animal the proportions matter more than the brand: hay is the bulk of the diet, a measured pellet carries what hay alone does not, and fresh greens and treats sit on top of both.

Hay first

Hay should be available all day, every day. It keeps continuously growing teeth worn down and keeps the gut moving, and a rabbit or guinea pig that stops eating hay is a vet visit rather than a feeding problem. Grass hays — Western Timothy, Orchard Grass, Oaten — suit adults. Lucerne and other legume hays are richer in protein and calcium, which makes them right for growing and nursing animals and too rich as a daily hay for most adults.

Pellets are a ration, not a bowl to top up

Pellets are concentrated, so they are measured to a daily amount and finished rather than left down. Choose by species and by life stage — young, adult and senior formulas differ in protein and calcium for a reason — and change brands gradually over a week or so. Guinea pigs are the exception that catches people out: they cannot make their own vitamin C, so their pellets must be a guinea pig formula, and an opened bag loses vitamin C over a few months.

Rats, mice and ferrets

Rats and mice are omnivores rather than grazers, so a rodent pellet is the base of the diet instead of an extra. Ferrets are obligate carnivores and need a high-protein, high-fat carnivore food — small animal pellets built for herbivores are not an option for them.
