Build the diet from hay first
For rabbits and guinea pigs, grass hay should make up the bulk of what goes in the enclosure every day. The long fibre keeps the gut moving and the constant chewing helps wear down teeth that never stop growing. Timothy is the usual first choice for adults, with orchard grass a useful alternative for fussy eaters, and oat or botanical hay offered as variety rather than as the staple. Pellets are the smaller, measured part of the diet and they are age-specific: Oxbow Essentials and Garden Select split into young, adult and senior rabbit formulas, while Burgess Excel splits into indoor, adult and mature nuggets. Guinea pig pellets are formulated separately again, because guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C. Treats such as baked biscuits, barley biscuits and timothy treats are a small top-up, not a food group.
Bedding, habitat and enrichment
Paper-based beddings such as Kaytee Clean & Cozy and Back 2 Nature are absorbent and low-dust, and Kaytee also makes an extreme odour control version for enclosed cages. Hemp bedding is a coarser, longer-lasting alternative. Match the cage to the species rather than to the price — Ferplast builds separate rabbit, guinea pig and mice cages because bar spacing and floor area differ. Enrichment matters as much as housing: woven tunnels, treat-stuffed logs and chew mats give a bored animal something to do, and F10 disinfectants and wipes let you clean the enclosure between changes.
