The Turtle Grass Plant is the aquatic member of Exo Terra's replica plant range — a clump of grass-like blades for a turtle tank, aqua-terrarium or the water section of a paludarium. Live plants in a turtle tank are usually a short story: most aquatic turtles eat them, uproot them or shred them within days, and a planted turtle tank needs lighting you would otherwise not run. A replica sidesteps all of that. The honest limitation is that it does nothing for the water either — it will not oxygenate, will not take up nitrate and will not compete with algae, so filtration and water changes carry the same load as in a bare tank.
One size. Exo Terra lists it simply as Turtle Grass, item code PT2996, and publishes no height or spread figures, so we have not quoted any — the packed weight is 0.165kg, which is the only number we can stand behind. For water quality use the Moss Ball Water Clarifier, floor the tank with Turtle Gravel and give the animal a dry area on a Turtle Bank; the rest of the range is in our Exo Terra collection.
Features
- Built for water — the one plant in the range intended to be submerged rather than kept in a dry or humid terrarium.
- Nothing to eat — a turtle can push through it without stripping it, which is what happens to live planting.
- No lighting needed — the tank only needs the light the animal needs, not what a plant would.
- Cover in open water — gives a hatchling or a nervous turtle somewhere to break line of sight.
- Rinses clean — lift out at a water change and rinse rather than replacing.
