Epsom salts is magnesium sulfate, and in a stable it earns its place mostly for external use - hoof soaks for abscesses, drawing poultices, and soaking bruised or filled legs. It is also fed as a magnesium source, though at feeding rates the sulfate has a laxative effect that limits how much you can use.

For an abscess, an Epsom soak helps draw and soften but it does not replace having the foot looked at - a foot that is not improving in a couple of days needs a farrier or vet, not more soaking. Fed internally, magnesium sulfate loosens manure well before it delivers much magnesium, so it is a poor choice if magnesium supplementation is the real goal.
How it is used
- Hoof soaks - dissolved in warm water, foot soaked in a bucket or boot
- Drawing poultices - mixed to a paste, applied under a bandage
- Leg soaks - for filled or bruised legs
Dissolve fully in warm water. Undissolved crystals are abrasive against skin.
