Sunflower is high in oil and energy, which makes it valuable in cold weather and for birds working hard, and a problem as an everyday staple — caged parrots fed mostly sunflower become overweight and selectively refuse everything else. Use it as part of a varied diet or as a winter supplement, not as the entire ration.

Feeding Guide
Offer as part of a mixed diet rather than on its own. For caged birds, limit sunflower and provide pellets, fresh vegetables and a separate seed mix alongside. Store sealed and dry; oily seed goes rancid faster than plain grain.
