Cuttlebone does two jobs at once: it is a calcium source, and it gives a bird something hard to work its beak against. Both matter. Laying hens of any species draw heavily on calcium, and a caged bird with nothing abrasive available can end up with an overgrown beak.
It comes carded, so it clips straight to the cage bars with the soft side facing in - that is the side the bird can actually rasp at. The hard shell side goes against the wire.
Sizes
- 20cm Single - one large bone for a bigger bird or a shared aviary.
- 15cm 3 Pack - three smaller bones, for several cages or a year's supply for one budgie.
Replace it when it is worn down or soiled. A bone that has been in a cage for months without being touched usually means it is mounted the wrong way round.
