Lucerne chaff is chopped lucerne hay — the highest-protein and highest-calcium of the three chaffs Perrys makes. That makes it the pick for growing horses, horses in work and breeding stock, where the extra protein and calcium are actually being used.
For the same reason it is the wrong chaff for a fat pony. If you have a good doer that gains weight on air, Oaten & Cereal Chaff or Wheaten Chaff gives you the bulk without as much of the energy and protein.
Chaff is roughage and a carrier for hard feed. It adds fibre and slows a horse down at the bin, but it will not put condition on a horse on its own.
Supplied as a 15kg bag. Chaff is bulky for its weight, so a 15kg bag is physically large.
