Equitex is a 20cm x 40cm medicated poultice dressing for horses — 100% cotton with a non-woven cover and a plastic backing, carrying boric acid as a mild antiseptic. It can be used hot, cold or dry, or cut down and used as pressure padding.
The plastic backing is the part people get wrong. It goes on the outside, away from the skin: it holds moisture and heat against the wound rather than letting it wick into the bandage. Put it against the leg and you have a wet dressing drying out from the wrong side.
Composition
- Boric acid 60g/kg
- Tragacanth 136g/kg
How to use it
Cut to size if needed. Saturate in cooled boiled water at around 38°C, squeeze out the excess, apply with the plastic backing facing away from the skin, and secure with a bandage.
Hold it in place with ValuWRAP cohesive bandage or ValuPLAST.
