Dog Treats

Dog treats do three different jobs, and the right buy depends on which one you need. Training treats should be small, soft and quick to swallow, so your dog can take one and get straight back to work — a large biscuit breaks the rhythm and fills the dog up before the session is over. Single-ingredient dried meat, liver and fish are the strongest-smelling and hold attention best in a distracting place. Long-lasting chews are for occupation rather than reward, and dental chews are a daily habit sized to the dog.

Whichever you choose, treats are food. The usual guidance is to keep them under about a tenth of your dog's daily kilojoules and to take that amount off meals, because treat creep is one of the quieter causes of weight gain. If your dog is on an elimination diet, single-ingredient dried meat is far easier to reason about than a flavoured biscuit with a long ingredient list. Hard chews, antlers and bones need supervision, and a determined chewer should never be left alone with something it can break a piece off.
