Grain Free Dog Food

Grain free dog food replaces wheat, corn, rice and other cereal grains with alternative carbohydrates - usually peas, chickpeas, lentils, potato or sweet potato - and typically carries a higher proportion of animal protein as a result. Is grain free right for your dog?

It is worth being straight about this. Grain free makes clear sense for a dog with a diagnosed grain sensitivity, and many owners prefer it for the meat-dense recipes that tend to come with it. But grains are not inherently harmful, most dogs digest them perfectly well, and "grain free" is not a synonym for higher quality - a grain free food can still be built on cheap protein. If your dog is thriving on a grain-inclusive diet there is no reason to change, and if you are switching because of a health concern, ask your vet before you do.

If you do switch, move across gradually over about a week, mixing an increasing proportion of the new food into the old. An abrupt change is the most common cause of an upset stomach after a diet swap, and it gets blamed on the food.

What to look at on the label

• Named meat first. "Chicken" or "lamb meal" beats "meat meal" - you know what you are buying.
• Protein percentage. Grain free dry foods here run roughly 28-36%. Higher is not automatically better; an inactive or older dog does not need the top of that range.
• Life stage. Puppy, adult and senior formulas differ in calories, calcium and phosphorus. Large breed puppies in particular need controlled calcium.
• Single protein. If you are working through an elimination diet, a single-protein recipe is the only kind that tells you anything.
