Hill's Science Diet small breed dog food comes under three different names, and they do not all mean the same thing. Getting them mixed up is the most common mistake on this range, so it is worth two minutes before you order.

Small Paws and Small & Mini are the same line. Small & Mini is simply the newer name Hill's has moved to, so older bags say Small Paws and newer ones say Small & Mini for what is effectively the same food. Either way it is a complete recipe built for small dogs: Hill's formulates it for the faster metabolism of small and mini dogs, at a higher kilojoule density, with a kibble texture shaped for a small dog's preferences. Hill's recommends it for dogs up to 11kg fully grown.

Small Bites is a different thing entirely. It is the standard Science Diet adult recipe made in a smaller kibble - Hill's describes it as being for dogs who prefer smaller kibble, with no breed size restriction at all. That makes Small Bites a sensible pick for a medium or large dog that bolts its food or dislikes big pieces, and it means Small Bites is not the small breed food a lot of people assume it is. If your dog is genuinely small, Small Paws or Small & Mini is the one you want.

Beyond the plain adult recipes, the small breed line runs across life stages and needs: Puppy, Adult, Adult 7+ Senior, Adult 7+ Senior Vitality, Adult 11+ Senior, Perfect Weight, Sensitive Skin & Stomach, Oral Care and Healthy Mobility. There is also a small dog mousse in wet food - chicken, turkey, a Perfect Weight turkey and a Sensitive Stomach & Skin turkey - which is useful for fussy little dogs or those with fewer teeth.
