Hill's Science Diet puppy food is complete growth nutrition for dogs from about two months to twelve — longer for large breeds. The first decision is your puppy's adult weight, not its size today

This is the one thing worth getting right, and it is not obvious, because every twelve-week-old puppy is small. What separates the formulas is skeletal growth rate.

Large Breed Puppy is for puppies whose adult weight will exceed roughly 25kg, and it is fed until around eighteen months rather than twelve. It is a genuinely different formula, not standard puppy food with bigger pieces: the calcium level is controlled, because a large-breed skeleton that grows too fast is more prone to developmental joint problems, and glucosamine and chondroitin are included for the joints that will carry the weight. A Labrador or German Shepherd puppy belongs here from the start, well before it looks large.

At the other end, small-breed puppies burn energy fast in a tiny body and need a denser, finer food. Hill's sells this as Small & Mini Puppy; you may still see the same line under its former name, Small Paws Puppy — it was renamed, not reformulated. Puppy Small Bites is a different thing again: the standard puppy formula in a smaller kibble, with no breed-size restriction, which suits medium breeds and any puppy that struggles with a full-size piece.

Then digestion, then format

Puppies change diet more often than they ever will again — leaving the litter, moving house, growing out of one stage. If yours has soft stools or an itchy coat through those changes, Puppy Sensitive Stomach & Skin is the salmon and brown rice option, available as both dry food and a stew. Change food gradually over about a week either way; most upsets during a switch are pace, not the food.

Wet puppy food is worth having on hand even if dry is the staple. The canned Chicken & Barley Entree and Puppy Savory Stew are useful during weaning, for a puppy off its food after vaccinations, and for adding moisture in hot weather. Feed it as part of the daily ration rather than in addition to it.
