KONG dog and cat toys

KONG has been making stuffable rubber chew toys since 1976, and this page brings together everything we stock from them: the rubber Classics, tug and fetch toys, plush, balls, treat-dispensing feeders and the Easy Treat paste that goes inside them.

The most useful thing to understand before you buy is that KONG rubber is colour-coded by firmness, not by size. Pink and light blue Puppy rubber is the softest, made for milk teeth that are still coming through. Red Classic is the middle grade and suits most average chewers. Black Extreme is the firmest compound, for dogs that get through red rubber. Purple Senior is softened again for older dogs whose jaws and teeth have lost some strength. Black rubber on a gentle-mouthed older dog is as much a mismatch as red rubber on a determined destroyer, so match the compound to how your dog actually chews first, then choose the size.

Size it so the whole toy cannot fit behind the molars. If your dog falls between two sizes, take the larger one: it is slower to empty and much harder to swallow.

Stuffing is what separates a KONG from a plain chew. Pack it with wet food, mashed banana or Easy Treat and leave it in the freezer until solid. A frozen KONG takes far longer to finish, and it is a genuinely useful tool for crate training, enforced rest after surgery, and dogs that find being left alone difficult. Whatever goes inside counts as food, so take it off the day's meal rather than adding it on top.

Not everything here is a chew toy. Wubba, plush and rope items are built for interactive tug and fetch with you holding the other end; left alone with a shredder they will come apart, and that is not a fault in the toy. Nothing in the KONG line is indestructible, so check toys over regularly and throw out anything with pieces missing.

KONG also makes collars, harnesses and leads, and they sit in this collection alongside the toys: a neoprene-padded adjustable collar, a Norwegian-style harness with a control handle, 1.5m rope and slip leads, and five retractable leads running from a 3m X-Small for dogs under 11kg up to a 5m X-Large rated to 70kg. Size a collar or harness by girth with a tape measure rather than by your dog's weight, and size a retractable lead the other way round — by weight, not by how much lead you want. Retractables belong on open ground; near traffic or other dogs a fixed 1.5m lead gives you far more control.
