Setting up a new enclosure
Work outwards from the enclosure, because its footprint and height decide everything else. A desert species wants floor space and a strong basking spot; an arboreal gecko wants height, branches and a vine to climb. Exo Terra glass terrariums and URS enclosures both take screen tops, so lighting sits above the mesh rather than inside with the animal. Next comes the temperature gradient — a basking lamp, ceramic emitter or heat mat at one end and nothing at the other, so the reptile can choose where to sit. Then substrate, at least two hides so there is cover at both the warm and cool end, a water dish big enough to soak in, and a thermometer so you are measuring rather than guessing.
Feeding, supplements and cleaning
Diet drives most of what else you buy. Insectivores need insects dusted with calcium, and Exo Terra sells tinned crickets, grasshoppers, earthworms and black soldier fly larvae, with Wombaroo insect food for gut-loading live feeders. Omnivores such as bearded dragons take soft pellets alongside insects and greens, and there are juvenile and adult versions because the protein-to-plant ratio changes as they grow. Turtles have their own pellet and stick foods from Exo Terra, URS and Nutrafin. Calcium with D3 is the standard dust, and a multivitamin powder covers what a captive diet misses. For cleaning, use a terrarium cleaner made for reptiles rather than a household spray, and condition turtle water with a turtle-specific product rather than a fish one.
