Royal Canin German Shepherd dry dog food runs to three life stages at PeekAPaw — puppy, adult and 5+ — so you can keep a GSD on breed-specific nutrition from growth right through to maturity. One detail catches people out at the checkout: the adult bag is 11kg, not 12kg. The puppy and 5+ bags are both 12kg.

Which one does your dog need? German Shepherd Puppy is for pups up to 15 months and comes in 12kg. German Shepherd Adult takes over from 15 months and comes in 11kg. German Shepherd 5+ is for dogs aged five years and over, in 12kg, and adds an antioxidant complex with an adapted phosphorus content to care for kidney health as your dog matures, plus collagen, EPA and DHA for cartilage. Five is earlier than you might expect to move a dog onto a mature formula — it reflects how quickly large breeds age rather than any problem with your dog.

Why breed-specific for this dog? Sensitive digestion is the issue German Shepherd owners raise most often, and it is what this range is built around. All three formulas use highly digestible L.I.P. proteins together with a selection of specific fibres — beet pulp among them — to help limit intestinal fermentation and support a balanced intestinal flora. The result owners actually notice is firmer, more consistent stools. Fish oil supplies EPA and DHA for the skin's barrier role and coat condition, and added nutrients support the bones and joints of a highly active working breed.

Worth knowing before you order. There is no small bag and no wet food in the German Shepherd breed line, so every purchase here is a large bag. Transition over about a week when you change stages — with a digestively sensitive breed, that is not optional advice.
