Royal Canin Golden Retriever dog food comes in two formulas at PeekAPaw — one for puppies, one for adults — and the first thing worth knowing is that both are sold in a 12kg bag only. There is no small trial size in this breed range, so if you are introducing it to a fussy Golden, plan for a gradual changeover rather than a small bag first.

Which one does your dog need? The split is at 15 months. Golden Retriever Puppy covers growth up to 15 months, with a complex of antioxidants including vitamin E to support developing natural defences, and highly digestible L.I.P. protein with prebiotics for stool quality. Golden Retriever Adult takes over from 15 months. A 12kg bag suits this breed reasonably well — an adult Golden eats enough that a large bag is used within a sensible window — but store it sealed, in a cool spot, and out of direct sun.

Why breed-specific for this dog? The Golden's dense, water-resistant undercoat traps heat and holds humidity against the skin, which is why the adult formula is built around skin and coat first: omega-3 EPA and DHA plus borage oil to help support the skin's barrier role and coat vitality. It also includes taurine along with EPA and DHA to help support healthy cardiac function, and an adapted calorie content for ideal weight. The kibble is shaped for the Golden Retriever's straight muzzle and scissor bite.
