Royal Canin puppy food is built around one question that almost everyone gets wrong: not how big your puppy is now, but how big he will be as an adult. Get that right and the rest of the choice is easy.

Pick the band by adult weight

Royal Canin's puppy bands are Mini (adult weight up to 10 kg), Medium (11–25 kg), Maxi (26–44 kg) and Giant (45 kg and over). A 10-week-old Rottweiler weighing 8 kg is a Maxi puppy, not a Mini one, and feeding him Mini Puppy would give him a calorie-dense small-breed food designed for a dog that finishes growing at eight months.

The bands exist because growth rates are wildly different. A Chihuahua is done at around eight to ten months. A Great Dane is still building bone at eighteen months, and for the large and giant breeds the goal is deliberately to slow growth down: a controlled energy level and a carefully balanced calcium and phosphorus ratio, so the skeleton is not asked to carry weight it has not yet grown into. That is why Giant is the only band split in two — Giant Puppy up to 8 months, then Giant Junior from 8 to 18 months, with the second stage stepping the energy back up once the fastest growth is over. Buying Giant Adult too early is a common and avoidable mistake.
