Royal Canin Mini is built for dogs whose adult weight will be 10kg or less — Chihuahuas, Maltese, Toy Poodles, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus and the many crossbreeds that land in that band. Adult weight is the part people get wrong. A four-month Border Collie sitting at 9kg is not a Mini dog and should be on Medium Puppy; a fully grown 9kg Cavalier is exactly the dog this line is for.

Small dogs run hotter than big ones. Per kilogram of bodyweight their energy requirement is markedly higher, so Mini kibble is more energy-dense than the Maxi equivalent and the pieces are small enough for a tiny jaw to pick up and crunch. That density is also why portions look almost comically small — weigh them rather than eyeballing a scoop.

Small breeds also age slowly, and Royal Canin's thresholds reflect that: Mini Adult 8+ starts at eight years and Mini Ageing 12+ at twelve. Compare that with Maxi, where a dog is mature at five and senior at eight. If you have moved a small dog onto a senior food at seven because that is what a big-dog owner told you, you have most likely moved too early.

Choosing between the branches: Mini Puppy runs to ten months. Mini Dental Care is worth a serious look for this size group, because crowded jaws mean small breeds accumulate tartar earlier than large ones. Mini Digestive Care suits loose or inconsistent stools; Mini Dermacomfort is for dogs that scratch and lick; Mini Light Weight Care lowers the fat content for dogs carrying extra condition; Mini Relax Care is aimed at dogs that struggle with change, travel or being left alone. Wet options are 85g gravy pouches in Adult, Puppy and Ageing, plus 195g x 12 cans — note the cans are 195g here, not the 410g size used for Medium and Maxi.
