Royal Canin Maxi

Royal Canin Maxi is for dogs whose adult weight will be 26–44kg — Labradors, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Rottweilers, Ridgebacks and the larger crossbreeds. As with every size line, the number that matters is projected adult weight rather than today's, which is why a fourteen-week Labrador puppy weighing 11kg goes on Maxi Puppy and not on Medium.

The puppy stage is the reason this line exists in the form it does. A large-breed dog is still growing at fifteen months, and the risk during that stretch is growing too fast: rapid weight gain loads joints that have not finished forming. Maxi Puppy is calibrated to moderate the growth curve and support developing bone and cartilage, and it is fed on a measured ration rather than left down all day. Putting a large puppy on adult food, or free-feeding it, is one of the few nutrition decisions with consequences you cannot undo later.

At the other end, large dogs are classed mature at five and senior at eight — Maxi Adult 5+ and Maxi Ageing 8+ — years earlier than a small dog. Maxi is also the only size line with a dedicated Maxi Joint Care formula, which is worth knowing if your dog has started to slow on stairs. Kibble across the line is deliberately large so a big dog has to chew instead of bolting.

Everyday branches are Maxi Dental Care (9kg), Maxi Digestive Care and Maxi Dermacomfort (12kg), Maxi Light Weight Care (12kg) and Maxi Relax Care (3kg and 9kg). Wet food comes as 140g x 10 pouches in Adult and Puppy, and 410g x 12 loaf cans. Dry bags run from a 1kg puppy pack up to 15kg.
