Royal Canin Medium covers dogs with an adult weight of 11–25kg, which in Australia is the biggest single group of dogs there is — Kelpies and Kelpie crosses, Staffies, Border Collies, Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Bull Arabs of the smaller sort and most unidentifiable rescue dogs. If you genuinely do not know what your puppy will grow into, Medium is the sensible default, and moving up or down a line later is easy provided you transition over about a week.

The band edges are where people slip. A lean 26kg dog is a Maxi dog, not a big Medium one, and leaving it on Medium means missing the joint support that the Maxi formulas carry. In the other direction, a chunky 12kg dog that should weigh 9kg belongs on Mini — the line is set by the weight the dog ought to be, not the weight it currently is.

Medium sits neatly in the middle on growth and ageing too. Medium Puppy runs to twelve months, against ten for Mini and fifteen for Maxi. Medium Adult 7+ marks the mature stage and Medium Ageing 10+ the senior one — later than Maxi's 5+ and 8+, earlier than Mini's 8+ and 12+. Kibble is sized so a medium jaw has to break it rather than swallow it whole.
