Sodium bicarbonate is one of the cheapest things in the feed room and one of the most used. Horse owners buy it as a feed buffer for horses on grain-heavy rations, and for the non-feed jobs it does well - poultice mixes, sweat and stain washes, deodorising rugs and buckets.
Available in 1kg and 5kg.
It is a plain single ingredient with no added flavour or carrier, so it is bitter and some horses will refuse it dry-mixed. Damp the feed or split the dose. Bicarb is a prohibited substance under most Australian racing and equestrian rules close to competition - check the current swab withholding rules for your discipline before you feed it.
Also used for
- Poultices - mixed with warm water into a paste for drawing poultices
- Coat and stain washes - lifts yellow stains from greys and light-coloured tails
- Yard and bucket cleaning - a mild abrasive that rinses off completely
