Dextrose is glucose in powder form - the fastest-absorbed energy source you can put in a feed. In a stable it does two jobs: a quick energy source for horses that have worked hard or travelled, and a sweetener that gets electrolytes and bitter medications eaten.
Available in 5kg.
It is pure sugar. That makes it the wrong thing for any horse that is laminitic, insulin-resistant, a good doer or on a low-sugar management plan - for those horses even a small dose matters. It is also a competition consideration: check the rules for your discipline if you feed it close to an event.
Common uses
- Carrier for electrolytes - the standard way to get an electrolyte mix eaten
- Palatability - masks bitter powders
- Post-work energy - fed in small amounts after hard work or travel
