Potassium chloride is one of the three salts that make up a working electrolyte mix, alongside sodium chloride and a magnesium source. People buy it straight when they mix their own electrolytes for horses in heavy work or travelling in heat, where a commercial mix gets expensive at volume.
Available in 1kg and 5kg.
Straight potassium is not a supplement to feed on its own. Horses on good pasture and hay are usually already getting plenty of potassium - it is sodium and chloride they run short of in sweat. Mixing your own only makes sense if you know what your horse is losing and what the ration already supplies; otherwise a formulated electrolyte is both safer and simpler.
Notes
- It is bitter - dextrose or a sweet feed is usually needed to get it eaten
- Always offer free access to water when feeding any electrolyte
- Store sealed; it cakes badly in humidity
