Povidone-iodine at 10% is the general-purpose antiseptic most properties keep on hand - navel dressing on newborns, hoof work after thrush or an abscess, and routine cleaning of minor cuts and grazes.
Available in 500ml and 1L.
It is an antiseptic, not a treatment for an established infection. Deep punctures, anything involving a joint or tendon sheath, and wounds that need closing are vet jobs, and iodine on top of them can delay the call rather than help. Repeated strong application also delays healing in granulating tissue, so dilute for anything beyond initial cleaning.
Handling
- Stains skin, clothing, concrete and rugs - it does not wash out
- Keep the container closed; iodine loses strength on prolonged exposure to light and air
- Check the expiry date before use on anything that matters
