Light liquid paraffin is the traditional lubricant laxative for horses and cattle. It is not absorbed, so it works by softening and lubricating rather than by stimulating the gut, and it is also used around a stable as a plain non-drying oil.
Available in 1L, 5L and 20L.
Do not drench paraffin oil yourself. It is tasteless and does not trigger a swallow reflex, so oil delivered into the airway instead of the oesophagus causes a severe and often fatal pneumonia. Drenching is a vet job with a stomach tube. If you are looking at a colicking horse, call the vet - do not start with the oil bottle.
Handling
- Store sealed, away from feed and out of sunlight
- Spilt paraffin is slippery on concrete and hard to clean off rugs
- Follow veterinary direction on rate and route - there is no safe DIY dose
