Seaweed meal is dried and milled kelp, fed as a broad natural source of trace minerals and - most significantly - iodine. It is a long-standing pick for horses on country known to be trace-mineral poor, and it is fed to dogs and poultry at much smaller rates.
Available in 1kg, 2kg and 5kg.
Iodine is the reason to be careful with it. Kelp is a concentrated iodine source, and over-supplementation matters most in pregnant mares, where excess iodine affects the foal's thyroid. Do not feed seaweed meal on top of a fortified feed or another iodine-containing supplement without adding up the total, and keep to the rate on the pack.
Typical uses
- Horses - broad trace mineral top-up, coat and hoof condition
- Dogs - fed at a fraction of the horse rate
- Poultry - mixed through the ration
Mineral content in kelp varies with harvest and season, so treat it as a general supplement rather than a way to correct a specific measured deficiency.
