An artificial leaf that fixes to the aquarium glass with a suction cup and sits just below the surface. Wild bettas rest on broad leaves near the top of the water, and a captive betta given the same thing spends less energy holding station. It also gives a male somewhere to anchor a bubble nest, which is a reasonable sign the fish is settled.
