Horse Wormers

Horse wormers from Virbac and Abbey Animal Health. The Virbac range includes Equimax, Equimax Elevation, Equimax LV, Strategy T, Razor and Ultimum. From Abbey Animal Health there is Equigel with Tape, iMEC with Tape, Applemax Gold liquid and Easymec in-feed wormer.

Choosing a horse wormer

Check the active ingredients and what they cover. Products differ in whether they include tapeworm and bots, and names with Tape indicate tapeworm cover. Rotating products with different actives, rather than a different brand of the same active, is what matters for worm resistance.

Dose by body weight. Underdosing leaves worms behind and adds to resistance, so use a weight tape if you do not know your horse's weight, and dose to the heavier side of the range.

Format is about getting the full dose in. Pastes and gels go straight into the mouth, while liquids and in-feed products suit horses that fight a syringe.

Faecal egg counts help decide when worming is needed. Ask your vet about a program for your property.
