NexGard Spectra
NexGard Spectra is sold as two separate registered products that share a name: a beef-flavoured monthly chew for dogs, and a monthly spot-on for cats. They contain different actives and carry different claims, so read the one that matches your pet rather than assuming the range is interchangeable.
Choosing a size for dogs
The dog chews come in five bands, and the bands are exact and adjacent: 1.35-3.5kg (Orange), 3.6-7.5kg (Yellow), 7.6-15kg (Green), 15.1-30kg (Purple) and 30.1-60kg (Red). Weigh the dog rather than guessing - a 15.4kg dog needs the Purple pack, not the Green one. Puppies can start from 8 weeks of age and 1.35kg bodyweight. The chew can be given with or without food, and protection is not affected by bathing, swimming or shampooing.
Given monthly, the dog chew rapidly kills fleas, treats and controls ticks, mange and mites, treats and controls biting lice, and provides effective heartworm prevention when given monthly throughout the year. It also treats and controls roundworm, hookworm and whipworm. One point worth knowing before you buy: it prevents new flea tapeworm infestations through flea control. An infestation the dog already has needs a product registered to treat flea tapeworm, such as ParaGard Allwormer for Dogs.
The cat spot-on is a different product
The cat applicators are sized 0.8-2.4kg (Purple, 0.3mL) and 2.5-7.5kg (Yellow, 0.9mL), for kittens and cats from 8 weeks of age. The cat claims differ from the dog claims: it controls fleas, controls new infestations of paralysis ticks with monthly treatments, treats and controls bush ticks, ear mite infestations and notoedric mange, prevents heartworm disease with monthly treatment, and treats and controls roundworms, hookworms, lungworm and tapeworms. Do not read the dog list onto the cat product.
Whichever you use, tick protection is not a substitute for checking your pet. To minimise the risk of tick paralysis, daily searching and removal of ticks is still required. Both products are stocked here in 3 pack and 6 pack.
