NexGard Chewables for Dogs
NexGard is a soft, beef-flavoured chew given to dogs once a month. It contains afoxolaner and nothing else, which decides exactly what it does and does not cover - the single most useful thing to understand before ordering.
NexGard is not NexGard Spectra
The two sit side by side on the shelf and the names are one word apart. NexGard covers external parasites: it rapidly kills fleas, treats and controls ticks including paralysis ticks, treats and controls mange and mites, treats and controls biting lice, controls flea allergy dermatitis, and prevents flea tapeworm infestations. It has no heartworm claim and no roundworm, hookworm or whipworm claim. If you want those covered by the same chew, NexGard Spectra is the product that carries them. If your dog is already on a separate heartworm preventative such as HeartGard Plus and a separate allwormer, NexGard is the piece that completes that routine.
Choosing a size
Four bands, exact and adjacent: 2-4kg (Orange), 4.1-10kg (Blue), 10.1-25kg (Green) and 25.1-50kg (Red). Weigh the dog - the bands do not overlap, so a 10.4kg dog needs Green. Puppies can start from 8 weeks of age and 2kg bodyweight, and the chew is safe to use in breeding, pregnant and lactating females. It can be given with or without food, and it is not affected by bathing, swimming or shampooing, which makes it a practical choice for dogs that swim or are washed often.
One dose is effective for one month: it kills fleas on dogs for 35 days, and kills paralysis ticks, bush ticks and brown dog ticks for 35 days. Tick cover is not a substitute for checking - to minimise the risk of tick paralysis, daily searching and removal of ticks is still required. Stocked in 3 chewables and 6 chewables; there is no 12 pack in this range.
