Royal Canin Dermacomfort is the everyday dry and wet food built for dogs that scratch, rub and chew at themselves more than they should. Royal Canin describes it as nutrition crafted to care for sensitive skin and to help a dog keep a full, healthy coat. The range is enriched with the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6 — including EPA, DHA and GLA — which help calm and protect the skin, and it is built on carefully selected low-allergen proteins to reduce the risk of an intolerance.

Choose the bag by the adult weight your dog will reach rather than by how itchy they are. Mini Dermacomfort comes in 3kg for dogs up to 10kg, Medium Dermacomfort in 3kg and 12kg for the 11-25kg band, and Maxi Dermacomfort in 12kg for dogs of 26-44kg. Kibble size is matched to the jaw as well as the calories to the frame, so a Maxi dog on Mini kibble does a lot of swallowing whole.

The Dermacomfort loaf in 85g pouches, sold as 85g x 12 or 85g x 48, is the same idea in wet form. It is the practical choice for a dog that is already fussy or on a narrow diet, because you can feed it on its own or use it as a topper on the matching dry food without introducing a second protein source.

One honest caveat before you switch. Itching has several causes — fleas, environmental allergies, a true food allergy, a skin infection — and changing the diet only helps the ones that are diet-related. Give any diet change a couple of months before you judge it, because skin and coat turn over slowly. If your dog is losing hair in patches, has broken or weeping skin, or the scratching is getting worse rather than better, that is a vet visit.
