West Paw makes dog toys, bowls and mats in Bozeman, Montana, and is best known for Zogoflex — a pliable, non-toxic rubber that is BPA, latex and phthalate free, and that can be sent back to West Paw to be reground into new toys. Most of what we stock sits in one of five families, and the family tells you more about whether a toy will survive your dog than the shape does.
Which West Paw range suits your dog
- Zogoflex fetch and tug — solid rubber built for throwing and carrying: the Jive and Boundr balls, Hurley and Zwig sticks, Rumpus, Skamp, the Zisc disc and the stretchy Bumi. Start here for a strong chewer.
- Zogoflex treat dispensing — Toppl, Tux, Qwizl, Rumbl, Tizzi and the Funnl, for stuffing, freezing and slowing a fast eater down.
- Seaflex — Zogoflex blended with 12% recycled ocean-bound plastic: the Sailz disc, the Drifty bone and the Snorkl tug. Rated for moderate chewers rather than the hardest ones, and all three float.
- Rowdies — the plush line: a HardyTex outer with mesh backing, moulded Zogoflex paws, recycled IntelliLoft filling and a hidden squeaker. Machine washable and dryer safe, which very few plush dog toys are.
- Feeding — the No-Slip bowl, the Feast Mat slow feeder and lick mat, the Doggie Placemat that sits under both, and the Toppl Stopper for filling and freezing a Toppl.
Matching the toy to the chewer
West Paw grades every toy by chew level, and the grading is worth taking seriously. Tough covers Boundr, Hurley, Jive, Qwizl, Tux, Rumpus, Skamp and Zwig; moderate covers Toppl, Rumbl, Funnl and the Seaflex toys; Bumi, Zisc and Tizzi are rated for gentle chewers, so a determined destroyer will get through them. A dog that shreds soft toys belongs on Zogoflex rather than a Rowdie — reinforced plush lasts longer than ordinary plush, but no plush toy is chew-proof. Whatever the material, West Paw's own advice holds: no dog toy is indestructible, so supervise play, size the toy to the dog, and retire it once it is damaged.
Sizing and filling
Sizes are not interchangeable across the range. A Small Jive is 6cm and fits a standard ball thrower; the 8cm Large does not. The Toppl Small and Large interlock into a harder puzzle, so buying both is not a duplicate. Qwizl is built around a bully stick or dental chew rather than kibble, so it earns its place only if you already feed those, and the Funnl is shaped specifically for an Earth Animal No-Hide chew.
