A skull hide is a hide first — an ornament the animal can get inside beats one it only walks past. Reptiles without cover stay alert and stressed, so most keepers run two hides, one at each end of the temperature gradient, and a skull is a reasonable way to make one of them look like something. The Crocodile Skull is the long one in Exo Terra's skull range: an elongated, low-slung crocodilian skull whose openings run front-to-back through the snout and jaw, so it behaves like a tunnel rather than a dome.
One size here, the Medium (PT2856). That shape suits slender, long-bodied animals — young snakes, skinks, geckos that prefer a close-fitting tunnel — and sits better in a wide, shallow enclosure than a tall one. It is a hide, not a water container: the interior is open at both ends and will not hold water, so keep a proper water dish in the enclosure. If the shape is wrong for your animal, compare the domed Primate Skull, the flat Buffalo Skull and the narrow T-Rex Skull, or browse the whole Exo Terra collection.
Features
- Tunnel-shaped interior — long and low rather than tall, which is what a long-bodied animal actually wants to lie in.
- Multiple entrances — a second exit makes an animal far more willing to use the hide at all.
- Takes damp moss — a small amount inside creates a humid retreat for shedding without wetting the rest of the enclosure.
- Rated for wet setups — Exo Terra lists the skull hides for desert, rainforest and aquatic terrariums.
- Non-porous resin — nothing soaks in, so waste wipes off rather than staining.
Specifications
One size, Medium (PT2856). Exo Terra does not publish dimensions for this size, so we have not quoted any; shipping weight is 350g, which gives a fair sense of the scale — it is a mid-sized piece, not a full-terrarium centrepiece. Holds no water.
Care
Scrub under hot running water with a terrarium-only brush, paying attention to the jaw recesses where substrate collects, and air-dry. No detergents or disinfectants unless every trace can be rinsed off.
