The most useful thing to know about Royal Canin senior dog food is that "senior" starts at a different age depending on how big the dog is. Large dogs age sooner, and Royal Canin sets its mature bands accordingly: Maxi Adult 5+ is for dogs of 26-44kg over five years old, Medium Adult 7+ for 11-25kg dogs over seven, and Mini Adult 8+ for dogs up to 10kg over eight. Buying on age alone is the common mistake — a seven-year-old Labrador has been in the mature band for two years, while a seven-year-old Chihuahua has not reached it yet.

There is a second step beyond the mature band. Once a dog is well into old age Royal Canin moves it onto the Ageing line: Maxi Ageing 8+ and Medium Ageing 10+ in 15kg, and Mini Ageing 12+ in 1.5kg. The naming is genuinely confusing, because the dry bags say "Adult 5+/7+/8+" while the matching canned foods say "Ageing" — Maxi Ageing 5+ loaf, Medium Ageing 7+ loaf and Mini Ageing 8+ loaf are the wet versions of the mature dry bags, not of the older Ageing bags. Match the number, not the word.

The breed formulas follow the same size logic with their own cut-offs. German Shepherd 5+ and Labrador Retriever 5+ both come in 12kg and both start at five, because both are large breeds; Poodle 8+ comes in 1.5kg and starts at eight. If your dog is already on a breed formula, stay in that line rather than crossing to the size range.

Wet options run to 410g cans in twelves for Medium and Maxi, 195g cans for Mini and 85g pouches, all worth considering for a dog whose appetite or teeth have faded. Do not read a food label as a diagnosis, though. Weight loss, drinking more, or stiffness on rising in an older dog are reasons for a check-up and bloods, not a reason to change bags — and we do not stock the Royal Canin Veterinary Diet prescription foods a vet might put an older dog on.
