Black beard algae (BBA) turns up as dark grey to black tufts on plant edges, driftwood and hardscape, usually in tanks where CO2 or flow has gone unstable. Animal Wellbeing's Blackbeard Algae Remover is an Australian-made liquid treatment aimed at it directly — pharmaceutical-grade glutaraldehyde with aquatic stabilisers and pH buffers, dosed straight into the water column. It is for freshwater aquariums only. Animal Wellbeing publishes no shrimp or invertebrate safety statement for this formula, so if you keep shrimp, snails or other invertebrates, read the bottle label before the first dose.
Available in 125ml, 250ml, 500ml and 1L. See the rest of the Animal Wellbeing range, or browse all Fish Supplies.
Benefits
- Targeted at BBA — formulated for Audouinella and Rhodochorton species, the red algae behind black beard growth.
- Buffered formula — aquatic stabilisers and pH buffers keep the concentration steady, so the dose behaves predictably.
- No teardown needed — dosed into the water column, so plants and hardscape stay where they are.
- Australian made — manufactured in Australia by Animal Wellbeing.
- Four sizes — 125ml for a single tank through to 1L for larger systems or ongoing dosing.
Ingredients
Demineralised water, glutaraldehyde, methanol.
Directions for Use
Do a 40–50% water change before the first application. Minor outbreaks: 6ml initial dose, then 2ml per 100L every second day until the algae recedes. Major outbreaks: 8ml initial dose, then 2ml per 100L every second day. Persistent cases: after three weeks, step up to 3–4ml per 100L daily if needed. Always follow the dose rate printed on the bottle.
Safety
For aquarium use only. Not for human consumption — keep out of reach of children and pets, and seek medical advice immediately if swallowed. Do not overdose, as it stresses fish. If the water clouds or fish show signs of stress, do an emergency water change.
