Hill's Science Diet Dog Food

Hill's Science Diet dog food is the everyday retail range from Hill's Pet Nutrition — sold without veterinary authorisation, and organised around a measurable outcome rather than a flavour. PeekAPaw stocks the Australian range in dry kibble, canned entrées, slow-cooked stews and small-breed mousse tubs, from eight-week-old puppies through to dogs of eleven and over. (We do not stock Hill's Prescription Diet; that is the separate vet-directed line.)

Work through it in this order: life stage, then body size, then need

The range looks larger than it is once you take the three decisions separately, and the order matters — each one rules out most of what is left.

First, life stage. Hill's uses 2–12 months for Puppy, 12 months to six years for Adult, then senior nutrition on a sliding scale set by size, not by a single birthday. Large dogs move across at Adult 6+, standard builds at Adult 7+, and small dogs not until Adult 11+, because they age more slowly. Running an ageing large-breed dog on standard adult food for an extra year is the most common error in this range. Senior Vitality is a distinct line within that group — it targets brain health and alertness, and is not simply another 7+ formula.

Second, body size. This is where dog nutrition diverges sharply from cat nutrition. Large Breed formulas, for dogs over roughly 25kg, add glucosamine and chondroitin because a big frame loads its joints far harder over a lifetime. On the Small Breed side there are two things that get mixed up: Small & Mini (formerly sold as Small Paws — same line, renamed) is a complete formula for adult dogs under about 11kg, with the energy density and nutrient levels a small dog needs; Small Bites is only the standard adult formula in a smaller kibble, with no size restriction. If your Jack Russell needs small-dog nutrition, Small & Mini is the one. If your Kelpie simply prefers a smaller piece, Small Bites is enough.

Third, the specific need. Perfect Weight is the clinically tested weight range — Hill's reports over 70% of dogs lost weight within 10 weeks on this nutrition — and comes with a Perfect Weight & Joint Support variant that folds in glucosamine and chondroitin for dogs who are both heavy and stiff. Sensitive Stomach & Skin pairs easy-to-digest ingredients with vitamin E and omega-6, for dogs with loose stools or a dull coat. Perfect Digestion works further upstream, using prebiotic fibre and Hill's ActivBiome+ ingredient technology to support the gut microbiome. Oral Care is mechanical rather than chemical: the kibble is shaped and textured so it scrubs the tooth surface as the dog chews. Healthy Mobility supplies glucosamine, chondroitin and omega-3 for joints already showing wear.

Dry, wet, or both

Dry dog food carries the most formulas and every kibble size, and it is the more economical format per feed. Wet dog food earns its place for dogs who drink too little, older dogs with worn teeth, and fussy eaters — and the format changes what a range looks like. Savory Stew and Healthy Cuisine are visibly chunked recipes; the Small & Mini mousse tubs are a smooth texture in a portion size that suits a 5kg dog rather than a 30kg one. Many owners run dry as the base and add a portion of wet, which is fine as long as the combined daily amount is adjusted rather than stacked on top.
