Hill's Science Diet is the everyday retail range from Hill's Pet Nutrition — food you can buy off the shelf, built around a defined outcome rather than a flavour trend. Four questions narrow the range quickly, and it pays to answer them in order. Who is eating it — dog or cat, and how old? Which format suits your household — dry kibble left down through the day, wet food for hydration and fussy eaters, or both together? Is there a specific problem to solve — weight, loose stools, hairballs, plaque, stiff joints? And for dogs only, how big is the dog, because kibble size and skeletal load genuinely change the formula.
Life stage is not decoration. Hill's splits at 2–12 months (puppy or kitten), 12 months to 6 years (adult), 7–11 years (Adult 7+) and 11 years and over (Adult 11+). Dogs shift on a sliding scale by size: Adult 6+ Large Breed, Adult 7+ for standard builds, and Adult 11+ Small Paws for little dogs, who age more slowly. A seven-year-old Labrador still eating standard adult food is the single most common mismatch we see.

Hill's runs two separate ranges, and they are frequently confused. Science Diet is everyday retail nutrition for healthy pets — that is the entire range on this page. Prescription Diet is therapeutic nutrition for diagnosed medical conditions, sold under veterinary direction: the letter-coded diets such as k/d, i/d, c/d, z/d, w/d and t/d, along with Metabolic, Urinary Care, Digestive Care, Kidney Care and Gastrointestinal Biome. PeekAPaw does not carry any Prescription Diet product. Hill's requires a recommendation from your veterinary healthcare team for those diets wherever they are bought, so your vet clinic or a vet-authorised retailer is the place to get them.
This matters because several Science Diet range names sound clinical. Oral Care, Perfect Weight, Sensitive Stomach & Skin and Perfect Digestion are everyday retail formulas for healthy pets. They are not therapeutic diets and they are not substitutes for one. If your vet has put your dog or cat on a Prescription Diet, do not swap to the Science Diet range with a similar-sounding name — speak to your vet first.
